Inquiring Minds and All That . . .

 My apologies to all my non-blogger readers who come here to get their daily dose of feel-good by knowing that at least A Mom on Spin's life is worse off than their own.   You've all earned a well-deserved break from the hilarity that is me.  So skip on off now and do something productive with your time for a change.  But don't forget to come back tomorrow. Do you all remember the short-lived "no funerals" post the other day?   Three hours later, the body was cold  . .  .
  ~~~~~~~~~~
And so the following is addressed to my fellow bloggers. . .
Okay folks! The time has come to 'fess up about how you blog. I don't want to know why you blog. . . or where you blog. . . or when you blog. . . but  HOW you blog. . .
You know the kind of stuff  I'm looking for.  What's the method to you madness?  The process that you follow?
Do you blog every day?  Every other?    Is each blog post carefully crafted, edited and reviewed?  Or does it spill forward like a stream of unfettered consciousness that just happens to land on the Publish button?
How many blogs do you follow?  How many blogs do you visit? How do you decide who will get the honor of your visit? Do you employ the Evelyn Woods method of speed reading when visiting?
And what about comments?  Do you comment with every visit? Do you play tit-for-tat?  Do you judge every post by the number of comments it brings?  Do you respond to comments by emailing?  When you receive an email from a fellow blogger, can you even remember what the holy heck you said on their blog in the first place?
Has there ever been a blogger who has annoyed you?  Ignored you? Inspired you? Adored you?
Have you ever regretting posting something?  Retracted a post?  Over-imbibed your box of wine and forgotten you published something?
Do you have a list of  blogging peeves?  Blogging perks?   Blogging no-no's?
Do tell, because I want to know.
I'd tell you about my own style, but it would violate the first item on my list of peeves. . . The long blog post!
If you tell me today, folks,  I promise I'll share my secrets with you tomorrow. . .
And just in case you're thinking of skipping out of here without a comment. . . I'll repeat what I said earlier. . . Do you all remember the short-lived "no funerals" post the other day?   (Perhaps not, 'cause only ten of you  commented. .  .)   Well, three hours later, the body was cold  . .  .
Oh, and if ellipses are on your list of pet peeves. . . go ahead and say it. . . I'm a big girl.
Same goes for p.s.'s and post-signature drivel. . .
Some posts are well thought out. I hold them in my head while I rearrange the verbage. Others just land on the publish button. I average around 3 posts a week.
I follow 142 blogs and I wish I had more time for commenting.
My only pet peeve is when people leave comments begging for me to see their blog or follow me and I'll follow you. It just turns me off.
My posts- humm really they are just me talking into the blogosphere. Sometimes I will sit down to write something "important" but most of the time. It is just me having a conversation with you.
Visiting other blogs- I try to visit everyone that comments and the blogs that I normally follow. Now, that is what I ATTEMPT to do. However, life, gets in the way.
Commenting- I try to comment when I visit, but that doesn't always happen. Usually it is because I just don't have anything witty to add or because damnit if one of the kids didn't just get into something, need their butt wiped, or fall down. Ya know, other life things.
Peeves- There are a lot. I could write a book on it. But mostly trolls and people who beg for comments.
Under the Influence said...
I follow 58 blogs. There are a several that I am especially loyal to (YES, you are one of them) and others I read based on the title and if it interests me.
I try to leave a comment as often as possible, but sometimes I am just left speechless. A rare moment for me.
I often respond to comments via e-mail, but not always.
I have revoked a post because I found out some family members were reading. I then changed my blog name and URL hoping to go undercover again. I don't know if it worked.
I usually draft my post in Word Works, let it flow from my thoughts, then edit it to be sure it's saying what I want it to say.
I post every Monday as I've had to back off a bit with life's demands. Primarily, I blog with my coffee in the mornings, because that's when I can justify spending the time it takes to read posts and comment on them.
I didn't count, but I would guess I follow about 130 blogs and I try to visit them at least twice each week and that's when I leave a comment.
No blogger has ever annoyed me; many have inspired me; and I'm not aware of any that ignore me but it's a distinct possibility.
Never regretted posting anything; never retracted a post. I don't judge other blogs by their number of followers or number of comments; some of the ones I love to visit have very few followers but I adore them.
Usually, I comment thru my own blog but occasionally, I also email the blogger. I always use email when I want to say something I consider very personal.
I'll get peeved sometimes when it's obvious from their comment that someone didn't read my post, as their comment is so far off the subject. But I also know that my posts are longer than most and people are always so short of pesonal time, or perhaps they're just not interested.
You've posed some very interesting questions and I'd love to know the results once you compile them.
Wow, interesting topic. I only started this in May, but for a while I did 6 or 7 posts a week. That was too crazy for me, so now I'm pretty happy with 4. I'm hoping they're like mini essays and not just rambling, cuz for me writing is the point, but I have to say I enjoy certain talented blogger's ramblings. I have almost 100 blogs on the reader but some I rarely read. There are probably somewhere between 10 and 20 that I really read most of (or ALL, like you and Twenty-Four or Midlife), and I've gotten great recs for blogs from some of these people. I usually comment on my faves pretty regularly but about half the time on others. Not that much into the diary type of blogging, unless the writer is especially clever. If they write really well it almost doesn't matter what the topic is. I reply to about half the comments I get and some fun conversations occasionally start. That's been fun, getting to know some great people a little, like you! Can't wait to hear some of YOUR answers.
I've blogged daily for my first year and a month...but missed posting for the first time yesterday. Yes, I write, think, edit, then hit publish.
All my fav blogs (tons and tons) are in my Rockin' Blogs list on the sidebar, so I read from there instead of in a reader. I always comment and never skim, but sometimes I can't get around daily to my fav. places.
Pet peeves = the word verification thingy and people who leave comments at my place and have no "return address" attached to the email notifications I get, so I can't reply to them. (Add those addresses to your blogging ID, please!) :D
Eternal Lizdom said...
I'm afraid this might get really long- so perhaps I'll blog about it and provide you the link!
Sometimes I am struck with an idea of something I want to blog about and I start to create it all in my head before sitting down at the keyboard. Most often, my writing just spills forth. I tend to blog from my office at work during the week. It wakes up my brain (with the help of my coffee, too). I don't go back and do a lot of editing but I do make an attempt at checking spelling. I blog daily 95% of the time.
As for comments... I reply to the comments left on my blog when I feel compelled to do so and I respond with a comment, not an e-mail. If the response is more personal or lengthy, then I would respond privately by e-mail.
I am following 227 blogs in my dashboard and I know I have a few more that I have listed in my blogroll that aren't in dashboard. I need to come up with a complete list and choose one way to get them all read. I also need to go through and clean up because I don't read them all! Some I pop in and glance over and some I read intently and some I always comment on. But most I stop in and read and comment if I feel called to do so. I recently started checking out the SITSTAhood and that is all about showing support through commenting so I am working on commenting more often. I don't comment tit for tat or anything like that. I comment when I have something to add.
I have connected with a few people through blogging and feel a kinship with a couple of people. I've had one falling out where I attempted to connect with someone who loves to fawn and "love" and adore everything written... and I made the mistake of taking her more literally and sincerely than she intended. I tried to connect with her more personally as she evidently had with other bloggers and it ended very badly. Turns out she's kinda crazy. So that's that. Bloggy lesson learned. The lesson? Some bloggers really are crazy. No mistakes made- I was being my genuine self and I can't fault myself for it.
Anyway.
Bet you get lots of long comments on this one! I'm more of a lurker here and you've now got an ear full from me!
There is No rhyme or reason to my blogging I am a mad woman gone wild a lot of times with a camera.
Great Blog Post though I love it. I am not a "writer" so I don't qualify for an opinion here but I will give a couple anyway.
Looooong Post drive me a lil crazy because I have an attention span of a nano minute. I try not to skim sometimes I do by the 10 paragraph.
I follow a lot of them and very loyal for the majority but the time factor good googly moogly I would never be able to sleep or anything just read and comment.
I have meet some wonderful people here some I even call my friends and really feel they are. Plan to meet several too.
I have been,ignored, annoyed, BUT Mostly Inspired and loved feeling in blog land. I Enjoy YOU all so much.
Glad I was able to just "skip off" and play from your post today..LMAO ;-)
Hmmm. I write whenever I can. I was writing M-F but lately I'm slowing down - not for lack of stuff to write about but b/c I'm getting busy.
I try to comment on every post I take the time to read. I have no idea how many blogs I follow. I have a core group who I read consistently (like you) and alot of others who I try to visit regularly.
My pet peeve is visitors who only visit so that I will return the visit and comment, Hopefully that made sense :)
RamblingMother said...
I follow way too many blogs and so do my reading on google reader mostly, that makes me forget to read the private blogs a lot but oh well.
Pet peeves is the public blog that goes private. I understand the need but it still peeves me.
I blog at will lately, whenever I have the will I do.
Comments are important but not the reason I blog. I can't e-mail most of the people who comment because there is no e-mail attached to the name.
I have fav bloggers that I do see off of google reader too and those are either personal friends who blog or we formed a virtual bond through our adoption agency or clicked because of adoption.
I post whenever something moves me enough to talk about it. I am a serious person in my writing, but I'm not so serious in real life. That sometimes creates problems in trying to figure out what to write. I guess it boils down to not being confident enough in my ability to show my sense of humor AND be funny to others. When I'm funny in person, people laugh, but I'm never sure I'm funny when I write. (then again, maybe people are laughing AT me as opposed to WITH me.)
So to answer your question, I've gone more than a month between posts. I have had one or two bloggers irritate me, but it's their blog, so they can write about whatever they want!
Sandy aka Doris the Great said...
My blog was created to help me cope & learn & vent etc as I age. It's really quite narcissistic!! But I'm hoping that somewhere out there is a kindred spirit who also wants to cope & learn & vent & share. And I think there are.
I follow a lot of blogs - around 150. But some of these are "on probation" to see if I really like them & I'm sure some haven't blogged in a while. I do employ Evelyn Woods speed reading & I choose blogs that are positive.
I comment when something moves me to comment; but if 50 other people have already commented, I refrain. I don't always respond to comments on my blog, but I try to always respond to new followers. So far, I've never regretted anything I've posted.
I try to blog every other day. I always proof read ('cause I've got this thing for English!). I like to be myself on my blogs -- really weird & funny & positive & I proof read also to make sure that I'm not putting anyone or anything down. God! I'm complicated!!
My peeves are people who are negative or real downers on a consistent basis (we all have down days) or people who have a lot of ads! But those blogs I just choose to ignore and not follow.
There you go!! I like your blog!
Oh My Goddess said...
I write everything as a new post in blogger and then copy to Word.
I post every other day.
I like to keep my time spent on writing a new post to roughly 30 mins.
I write 3 blogs:Oh My Goddess is mostly my catch all blog, Single Mom Guru is about being a divorced mom and I started one for a PTA group called IB for Greenwich which is to promote the Int'L Baccalaureate program in town.
I never should have told my boyfriend about my blog, because I can't post about what a silly goose he is sometimes.
My mother thinks blogging is self indulgent and a waste of time, she prefers my newspaper submissions.
I am toying with the idea of teaching a short cont ed class about what is a blog?
I'm not sure why I like blogging, but it's something I can't really stop now.
blueviolet said...
You know, if you were a teacher, I would totally skip your class.
You ask entirely too many questions. ;)
I blog every day if possible and almost all of my personal posts are written about two seconds before publishing. I would do them in advance but I'm perpetually behind in all of life.
I can't email replies to most comments as I simply don't have time and I choose to go visit the commenter's blog and comment there instead.
I follow hundreds of blogs but blogs I visit the most or when I start to see someone commenting me a lot will get moved into my must reads folder on my reader and I hit those daily if I can. Those are the people that really become my blogging buddies.
I comment on every post I read. I'm a huge commenter. I spend hours and hours every day reading blogs and commenting. It's a sickness really.
The Red Headed Mama said...
Do you blog every day? Ha, I wish
I blog whenever I have the time/thought process to put more then 3 words together.
Is each blog post carefully crafted, edited and reviewed? Or does it spill forward like a stream of unfettered consciousness that just happens to land on the Publish button?
Depends, some more more thought out then others...but most of the time I just hit publish and move on.
How many blogs do you follow? WAY TOO MANY!
How many blogs do you visit? How do you decide who will get the honor of your visit? Do you employ the Evelyn Woods method of speed reading when visiting?
I use google reader, I comment when I have something worthwhile to say.
And what about comments? Do you comment with every visit? Do you play tit-for-tat? Do you judge every post by the number of comments it brings? Do you respond to comments by emailing? When you receive an email from a fellow blogger, can you even remember what the holy heck you said on their blog in the first place?
I don't pay attention to comments, if I have something to say, I comment. Sometimes I find posts hilarious but I don't comment...I should. I suck.
Has there ever been a blogger who has annoyed you? Ignored you? Inspired you? Adored you?
All of the above :)
Have you ever regretting posting something? Retracted a post? Over-imbibed your box of wine and forgotten you published something?
I've retracted a few, my family doesn't know I blog and once in awhile I'll take a post down when I panic b/c it's something I don't want them reading.
Do you have a list of blogging peeves? Blogging perks? Blogging no-no's?
I hate giveaways that have 14000 different things for entries.
That's about it. :)
You've asked a lot of questions so I'll just answer a few of them since I have a two year old screeching at me.
I try and blog every day of the week but take weekends off. Well, sort of. Even though I don't post, I usually use that time to catch up on notes and such.
I follow probably 100 blogs right now. No, I don't have time to read them all. I try though.
Lorri said...
Thought provoking post. Which I can use since I haven't laid a finger to the publish button of my blog in a couple of weeks. I try to blog 4 or 5 days a week but occasionally I hit a wall. Like now.
I visit 4 or 5 blogs regularly and lurk more often than I post. Generally I doubt that I have anything significant to add so I don't comment. As for comments on my blog, I have one loyal fan(atic) who comments often. I reward him by never publishing his comments but occasionally addressing an entire post to his nuttiness.
Pseudonymous High School Teacher said...
dude. That is a lot of questions.
I blog with the ups and downs of my life. sometimes I have lots of time and sometimes I don't. sometimes I post 5 days a week and someitmes I post once.
I follow a lot of blogs. I've been blogging over a year now and have more blogs than I can keep up with. I don't beat myself up if I cannot get to read every post even though I want to.
When time is short, I visit the people in my comment thread first. But there are a few blogs I follow because I love them and really do not care if they don't come to my own blog.
I wish I could blog and write full time. Really really do.
Here's how I should do it:
Post every day
Comment on every blog that comments
Comment on every blog that I follow
Reply back to every comment via e-mail
BUT Life happens.
Lately, I've put myself under a 365 post challenge, as you know. Or as I think you know, because Thank God You're One of My Regular Commenters.
But I also started a new job. Having trouble commenting back. Having more trouble visiting followed blogs daily. Having lots of trouble replying back via e-mail.
But I'm working through it! In my perfect world, though, I would be able to do it all.
Amy@Bitchin'WivesClub said...
I blog with the best intentions! I want to blog every day... but don't have time. I want to go read everybody's blogs who commented on mine.... but don't have time. I really want to hit my 5-10 favorite blogs and the 20 other blogs that I adore because of the author who I feel a connection/friendship with, the photography, or the pop culture debriefing (I'm talking to YOU, MamaPop).... but I just don't have enough goshdarned time!!!! I have 200 blogs that I "follow," but I only have the 40 or so that I really want to go read in my Google reader.
I still love so many things about the blogging community and the people that are in it (BlogHer will always rank in the top 20 best experiences ever), but I recognize that I have three small children that need me more than anybody in Blogland does. I also have a husband who not only needs me more that everyone here does, he will get personally offended/hurt if I choose to spend all my time interacting with my online community and not with him and the kids.
It is all about balance and "balance" does not mean that the one side is equal to the other. I give what I can, write what I can, chat when I can, support when I can....and always *unfailingly* feel like I get back twice what I put in. (Like when you are so amazing and keep coming back to my site to read and comment and I hardly ever get over here to comment - but I do scroll through my reader to catch up on people - so it doesn't always mean that I am not reading!)
Also, there are only three blogs that I ALWAYS read and comment on: http://OkayFineDammit.com http://annsrants.com http://lostandfoundinindia.blogspot.com
How was that for laying it out? You're awesome, Liz.
blognut said...
I've backed off a bit lately - I used to feel the need to post everyday whether or not I had something to say. Now, with the kids back in school and the sports schedules gone wild, I do it less often.
When I feel like posting, I sit down at the computer and start speed-writing. Essentially, I type without thinking, and without lifting my fingers from the keyboard. I burn out a bit later, and then I go back and read it. Usually, there's a string of something in there that I can actually use and turn into a post that lives up to my promise to provide 'mindless rambling'.
Too many questions. Which leads me to thinking....wait ....was that ellipses???
I'm kinda tired of blogging, to be perfectly honest. I'm not interested, like Beth says, of those who demand I visit them in my comments. I've made some wonderful r/ships with people thru blogging, and those r/ships will go on regardless of whether they or I blog....Dar is one of 'em :) So is Amy. So is Vodka Mom, Ann's Rants, Suzy Soro, Janie, and I'm going to have to stop listing them cos there are others but it would take too long. Pearl, Lilly...ok I said I'd stop. Sharon. OK OK OK. Irish.
As for bloggers who have annoyed me, I have had 2 absolute idiot nutcases recently: one who started blogging after all of us crowd did, but who emailed me and told me I was stalking her, stalking her followers, and sneaking onto her blog without commenting. I figure this woman is frikkin' insane, seriously at a loss to grasp the realities and priorities of life....can you imagine sending an EMAIL to someone saying that? Then another blurted a pile of crap out on her blog and when I told her it was kinda ugly and made me not want to visit, she does an "anonymous" post about me saying how I destroyed her life.
I think if you're insane you should be banned from blogging. No really....
I respond to comments by emailing. I have no clue how many I follow, but like Amy said, I only have a certain number I visit religiously. I like yours cos it's funny and outside of the "me me me" routine. I'm irritated like hell by the boring, diary-like entries that we're expected to find fascinating....no way do I want entry into someone's mundane daily crap.... why would I?
The mom blogs annoy me, unless they're entertaining like Vodka.
I've really got to shut up now....
:)
I try to post at least twice weekly. I do Saturday Sounds most Saturdays where I write about something related to music. And I post one more time mid-week about other subjects. I usually first write my post in my head and edit it over and over and over, sometimes scribbling little notes to myself on peices of scrap paper so I don't forget them. Then I write and edit again. Sometimes I will just sit down and write something only editing once.
Thanks for following!
I've written every day for the last 463 (yep, I kep count) days. Why? Who knows. Might be a sickness.
THere are also blogs I check every single day. Ian at Idiot Stew, Powdergirl, Braja, Ann's Rants, Mapstew, Rene at Not the Rockefellers, The Jules and others I'm not recalling at the moment. It's a world of friends, confidantes, and people who judge not by appearances but by words, and I like that.
I don't keep up well with blogs at all. I go through fits and spurts.
Great post! Love reading through the feedback.
Liz, this is homework, right? I started blogging because I enjoyed reading blogs and then thought I would give it a go myself when I was stuck at home full time pre-and then post-operatively...
I've made some lovely friends, many of whom comment here (Bloggus, Braja VKMon et al) and write like angels (and demons!), including you - That keeps me blogging, and curiosity about all those wonderful lives...
I post in big gulps, several at a time, sometimes... I've learned to schedule now I'm back in full-time work, but I'm struggling to get around to reading all those whom I loved to read formerly (e,g, Ann), and that hurts me, because I feel I have lost touch with some beautiful people... I used to comment like a madwoman, now I only comment when I have time, but because I'm often catching up, e.g. with you in one great long gulp - sometimes for around an hour, depending on how much folk have written, I don't comment on every posting, and I don't even know if some bloggers know I've been there, traipsing about their lives, like I used to...
Long comment, sorry dahlink, and I want you to know how much I love and respect you and your lovely sense of humour, girl... x
I love reading you so I check you pretty often. I write when I am in the mood or get a good idea. I have a section on my Blackberry for saving good ideas that come to my head.
I can't seem to get beyond 37 followers & that really bugs me! Opening my blog & seeing 0 commetns super bugs me & I have not found what the patteren is that gets people to respond.
I was surprised to get lots of comment when I did some memes, so should do that again I guess.
How I blog: In the evenings with a glass of wine. I make myself post before reading others or I may never get anything written! I love reading others & I am drawn to funny titles that make me curous.
I don't publish my email because I share it with Hubs & it would make him cranky. I really love using photos in my posts most the time. Some of my longer more serious posts have made me feel really good after writing them but get very few comments so I wonder if it is a turn off to get too serious.
I am rambling here & just got a call to pick up Hubs with car trouble so bye.
Love reading you!
I have never thought to do the read-from-my-sidebar-list route. I kinda like that idea!
I have no method. I used to post a lot more fun and interesting things, and I'd post every day but Sunday. Now my life is in a bit of a turmoil, so I'm selfishly thinking of only me and all that entails, so I try to keep that boring-ness out of the blog...which leaves fewer and not so fun posts! Ta-daaah!
Some weeks I only do the "theme days," wheras sometimes I'll get a wild hair and a unique thought and go with it. If I think of it beforehand, I'll post at midnight the next day, and it's always agonizingly edited. Otherwise, if it's day-of and I haven't posted and miraculousl think of something, I hit Publish right away.
I follow 87 blogs. I have about 30 that I would consider "Daily" reads, if they post. Usually, these are people I've followed from the beginning, and it's kind of a give and take relationship. However, there are a number of lovely people who comment regularly at my place, but whose blogs I do not follow. I feel like an ass, but it's quite difficult to keep up with so many blogs. I use e-mail to respond to their comments (and everyone's actually), and I have a good relationship with some of them, even if I don't hang at their place. But, you know what? I'm on the other end of that at other bloggers' places too, and I'm cool with that because I understand.
Two things that aren't necessarily peeves, but make my tummy feel icky sometimes: when people mention other bloggers as their BFF's and you're not one of them (even if you KNOW you're not super close to them, it's still kinda sad); and when you go comment at someone's place, and then later that day they comment at yours, and then haven't been there in awhile--it kinda makes you think that your comment "reminded" them that you were there. Ouch. BUT, there are many sides to all stories, and I'm sure I've engaged in those actions many a time, so I shall not throw stones (big ones anyway).
