From Houses to Homes Guatemala

Well, Daughter Number One is off to Guatemala on a service project this morning. . . and, yes, I admire her courage and her willingness to be part of the solution.






But still I worry for her safety and her well-being.



This is not a college-sponsored service trip. . . she is not going with others she knows. . . . she's just volunteered to be part of a building team whose members will come from across the globe. . . . she'll stay with a host family. . . drink a lot of bottled water. . . and hope that the few words of Spanish she knows will get her by.

And say a little prayer that Daughter Number One survives for ten days without her cell phone, iTouch, laptop, or flip flops. Pray that she wears those baggy shirts her father made her pack, and the sunscreen her mother begged her to bring. Pray that she never has need for the pepper spray her father snuck into her suitcase or the insurance card her mother forgot to give her. Pray that she comes home in one piece without having adopted a Guatemalan child. And - above all - pray, that after this trip, her desire to join the Peace Corps and move to Africa for two years will become something of a distant memory. . .
